I do a demonstration of the tool initially to show students how to use the tool correctly. I then try to use a student to demonstrate its use so the other students can see how it is done or can point out any errors in its use. It serves a good reinforcing exercise. If there are still difficulties in its use further demonstrations with students or even myself helps to rectify any usage problems. Reiterating the advantages of using as tool correctly helps enormously
Sometimes. Especially with tools that require a specific set-up. Electrical tools Portable Power Router, Jigsaws etc require fairly constant Health and safety issue reminders (Although any Hand and machine tool need this) Hand tool usage generally speaking seems to be more easily understood and dexterity more achievable. Although even with some hand tools eg For Hand Planes, students still require several demonstrations in setting up blade depth and angles.....
Many times.... Some times requiring the whole class to stop and watch the demonstration
I think it would be an excellent way to reinforce learning and understanding in DT students. Especially if a student arrived late to the class or enrolled later in the school year it offers an excellent resource for students of all ages to catch up or reinforce their learning of the DT Practical Room
Interactive Materials Store sounds great! Products or Projects that use particular materials could be displayed, showing why or how these materials are better for projects. Interactive links to other websites for reference or more information on DT topics could be included. eg technologystudent.com http://www.design-technology.org/ Including videos of using tools or processes followed. Student directed or student led site might be encouraging where other students can ask or answer questions on DT eg ibsurvival.com is a very student oriented site. Perhaps a DT page could be set up on here

Use the shadow board; have a video with demonstrations; demonstrate the use of tools at the beginning of lesson; repitition
Yes - especially if English is their second langague; there are alot of tools and some time it is hard - that is why the labels are important
    Quite a few times :)
I think this would be an excellent idea - students can access these at home and help with process journal; add to the accuracry
Interactive material; also you could do it as a help desk - if a student needs to fix a problem they could use that

go to the workshop during one of the class and watch the teacher showing demonstration of how to use some complicated tools or just simply revise from a textbook/other sources available
i asked my classmates who had better knowledge of tools than me or asked the teacher
i dont really think this would help as part of revision of the uses of tools but 3D CAD drawings can definitely help in the development of the design and also helps in viewing the overall design
i've used google sketch up to design my lamp i think the best feature of it was that i could view it in 3D which allowed me to look at my design at different perspectives
i could easily see my final design and it really helped me to add or take away bits to make my final product more successful

I liked the way it is divded into two separate room from workshop to planning room. I think this structure certainly inspired me to plan well to get to the final step of the design process.
I don't have things I dislike about DT class. I think it's because there are all needed tidily.

    #NAME?
I think this can help people with revision of the tools to some extent.
    Nope,
I think 3-D worlds can help in my education. For example, in mathematics, when people learn about 3-D shaped structure, 3-D worlds can help people understand better.
    Yes
I enjoy everything in design technology, this is because i like cutting and piecing things together.
I am scared of the sharp drills because they are very exposed.
    No
    Yes, I asked the teacher.
I just asked the teacher or a friend.
I think it would help a lot to picture and be able to see what you supposed to do in 3d.
Yes i have played a lot of games that are in a 3d world. I think the best features are when a 2d object becomes 3d. The colors that i liked where the ones that make an image pop out or stand out.
If an object is 2d and cannot be imagined in a 3d way, the 3d perspective can improve the point of view of an object. We can also find more ways of doing something.
    Yes

chopping woods (it's very manual labor)and making an object that I designed (sense of freedom and fun)
Doing brainstorm (there are just so many things to consider)/evaluation (seems useless when we are not going to do the project again)
    Yes
I couldn't cut wood straight with a saw so I decided to practice cutting it on just random wood including tables. Also, for some reason, I could never use triangular ruler well... I couldn't help it
not really, my logic is to find tool that fits my work
it would not help the revision of tools

yeah possibly, but for some like me who has not really had a chance to do that kind of stuff, it could be awkward.
    no.
for sociology or geography, 3D model could be helpful. Reproducing the places where students have never been is definitely educationally helpful.
    No
Yea I have. I either look at what other people use the tools for or look them up online.
Um I guess so since you could 'explore' stuff like looking at it more closely
It was a game, so.. I played it? lol. Being able to go around places with colour and structure (e.g. side view, upper view) changes were nice. In my opinion the colours didn't need to have like a gradient or something.
Bio - to understand complex structures of stuff
    No
In that kind of situation, I would search for the information through internet or ask someone.
Since we cannot make whatever we design or want to have and see, using 3D worlds is good to use and have imagination. However, since the photos are shown above do not look realistic. Also for the first one, it seems like does not have perspective. 3D worlds should improved to persuade to let people interested in Design Technology.
Nope!
I did not use 3D world but I saw one. As a example, there is an architecture piece. It is easy to look over and see through without having real 3D work.

    Yes
I've searched on the internet or ask people around me
I think that by using 3D models, it would help me to make product better, and this will make me know about the tools more
    no
In math, for example I did an assignment about cheese and I wonder if I had 3D shape that I could draw through my computer.

It allows me to be creative. I can pretty much produce anything out of my mind. Another part would be that I get to learn the steps that are essentials to go through instead of going straight to creation.
I don't like the fact that our products are graded by teachers. I know it's ridiculous to say this since it is part of our grades, but still, I don't feel like such piece of creative and art work should be judged by number out of 6. Sometimes it means or deserves more than that.
    Yes
I just asked teachers or DT assistants.
I asked teachers when I had questions on the materials to use.

In Grade 7, I felt the need to learn more about some of the tools I was using, Fortunately, the teacher explained to everyone about how to use the tools appropriately and in a safe way.
I don't recall previously having the need to revise the method(s) with which I used tools.
If I have a question I need to ask (about using a tool), I won't hesitate to approach the teacher(s) about it, and I'll just listen to what advice they have to offer.
I haven't really had any trouble with understanding the teacher(s) when he/she was demonstrating to me how to use a tool.
I think at some point I might have forgotten how to use a tool. However, I walked up to the teacher and asked him to help me out.
I find that the tools which require more strength (e.g. chainsaw, wooden mallet) are a bit harder to learn.

I ask to teacher or use internet to find out more about the tools.
I felt that I needed to revise the method of using tools. I had hard time to use saw, because it was hard to cut wood while keeping saw parallel to ground. So, I used saw while keeping saw little bit inclined from ground.
It is little bit uncomfortable, because I'm afraid a bit to make mistake while talking due to the reason that English is not my first language, and I'm also afraid of teachers might consider me as reckless person who don't listen to teacher carefully.
I had trouble when teacher is using many DT words, for example, at first year of Grade 7, it was hard for me to understand design cycle, especially words like investigation, and aesthetic.
No. But sometimes, if I forget some process to use drill or machines, I ask teacher or friends.
It was hard for me to use chisel and wooden hammer, because I was bad at controlling my strength, and I broke wood unnecessarily for more than 3 times.

I don't have a problem with asking teachers how to use a certain tool. I think that, if you don't understand something, you should ask, instead of doing nothing because you don't know how to use the tool.
I don't know if I had trouble understanding or not, but if that happens, I would ask the teacher to demonstrate it to me again with a more detailed explanation.
I would revise it by asking a classmate or teacher. If that's not possible, then I would search the Internet or ask my parent.s

Yes this is very futuristic and it feels like you are in a game rather than learning. It also gives a student lots of chances to go back and revise or relearn somethings if they dont quite understand it.
As I said it gives you the opportunity to go back and forth many times, if you are unsure of some concept or term associated with tools or equipment. Also I can see the expansion opportunities of this virtual world model is unlimited. You have started with tools. Next you could go on to videos of actual creating processes and students can viewthese to help improve their construction skills
    Yes
Yes this would be an invaluable tool for the reasons I stated above and also because you could be anywhere and be able to access this. So while you are driving to school you could be revising on the bus or taxi before a test. While you are away somewhere at an airport or waiting to meet a friend in a cafe you could be still practising your DT skills and knowledge.
It is very specific and DT oriented. While you can find the lots of different things on the internet and DT related. This site or virtual world is specifically dedicated to learning and understanding all things Design technology. It also would be a great reference or resource for ESL learners as it gives them clear images and they can see where the tools are applied as it reinforces the context of where the tools are found and how they may be used
Again it reinforces the concept of where you find tools like this and how they are used. It helps to reinforce in students their understanding of the workshop and all the equipment tools in there and how they are used correctly to perform the process. Unfortunately I couldnt get the video to work. but from the stills it looks great..........
Again the reinforcement of Tool Names and what the tools are used for. Videos of how the tools are used and on what projects they may be used would also build on this concept.
I think the realism and care/time you have spent on making the room look as real as possible. Its a great first effort on this. I know there are always areas that can be improved or tweaked but this is very normal in setting up a virtual world especially a brand new one that I have not seen before.
Nothing it is coming together really well. As this is a prototype model. It has great potential in the field of design and technology and I think in the sciences as well. Actually it could be usefull in most secondary school areas where there is a practical element, say in PE for example..
All of the above. Because they can acccess the virtual world when it suits them. If they have a busy scedule one day then they can access it later that night or on the weekends or whenever they get the chance. I think because it looks like a game, lots of students are going to want to play it and see if they can improve.
    Yes
Maybe have music associated with each slide or video. Sometimes this can inspire and motivate some students especially if it is a popular song or some music that encourages concentration in learning or is associated with DT. eg Perhaps a cutting noise when the student clicks on the Tenon Saw? Another suggestion that I would consider is making the DT room into a sort of computer game. Whereby different questions are worth different points. Some instant success banner or notice flashes onto the screen to give encouragement to keep the student going. eg Congratulations! you have answered that correctly! Keep going to see if you can get the highest score today! Maybe questions get harder as you progress through the game? Could eventually have different levels and different types of DT rooms. The one you have set up is really for Product Design and or MYP Technology. Perhaps there could be a room for Food Technology, Electronics, Robotics, Textiles, CAD CAM applications? There are many many opportunities for this Ji Yoon and you have started a very good project here! If you were interested you could forge a whole career out of this quite easily. Hope all these answers help e-mail me again if you need help

    Yes
Yes as sometimes I do not neccesarily have the time to stay after school because of the traffic jam and by using the tools virtually it would help students who live far a way from school
I believe this will be a better way to learn rather than reading online articles as you are actually performing the activities virtually
This is because the tools being virtual will not be dangerous to use for clumsy students, morover, the programm serves as an electronic medium for students to converse to the teacher privately if they are too shy to talk in class and the tutorial will be helpful in better undertanding tools

I think it is very interesting way to learn because it is 3D model
Yes I think I will be able to learn better by using this because it shows more details and it is visual things
    Yes
YES because it shows detail of tools (3D) so it would be easy to learn
Yes because it is very visualize and can be rotated
    I didn't see the video
Yeah, but you didn't finish making it, so it was confusing
I liked the model and tables that you made. Also I liked the color
    I didn't like the portal
Because it shows the exact same thing in our D.T studio, so it is easy to understand what the tools are.
    Yes
I think you should not use any words, just demonstrate the things, so people who are not good at english cannot
    Yes
Yes because it's not a traditional way to learn.
Yes. It contains a video tutorial and it's interesting to learn.
    Yes
Yes. I could access it whenever and search about tools if I forget things.
Yes. Internet research requires time to search for the correct information, but this is a place that contains it. so it reduce time for me in researching.
Yes. The video was very helpful.
Yes, it contains videos to teach me how to use it. It also have a 3D model that shows me what it is.
    Portals
    color
Yes. They could enjoy this 'game' like learning tool. The could revise the tools easily. They don't have to search on internet, go on many different website to search about a tool.
    Yes
    More tools :)
    No
Yes, some people are “blind" when it comes to DT. They really need something like this so they are not close-minded
No, I understand DT and the software does not seem easy to use.
    Yes
Yes, it helps student to learn more
I havent opened it but it seems appropriate to be revising tool
Havent opened but they seems very detail
Havent opened but it needs color and more attractive elements.
    portals and the animation
color and environment, too plain and boring
For all of them, so that they remember and gain more knowledge

    Color and Details
    No
yes because it is like playing video games and learning at the same time
yes cuz i can concentrate on it
    Yes
    yes, it's fun
    yes, it's fun... and it's in 3D
    yes
    models and videos
    nothing
yes... it help them concentrate and revise by themselves
    Yes
it's great... but i think all the colors are very dull... it's better to have some bright colors
Yes, I guess so. Since this 3D room is similar to actual DT room at school, it is interesting way to look around and learn about DT more motivated.
I guess this would be useful to use and learn because I do not need to find sources or video through Google every time. Also as the video and the figures or the tools are matching each other, it would be easy to understand.
I think this should be accessible outside of school because this can be used by other people who have interest in Design Technology.
This is a good revising tool compared to internet search because this has actual design technology room as base and that give us motivation into the design technology.
Because it is good recourse to have self study in design technology. It is self problem that they often forgets how to use a tool safely or shy to ask questions to the teacher and so on, however,it is just wasting time to have demonstration again or learn the tools once more during the class, since the design technology class ends faster than the other in psychologically especially me.
mm.. I guess if you make the 3D model more realistically, this project would work better.

    Artifact Reflection - Probability: Dice
    Unit Title: Probability
    ...
    three dice.
What Did You Learn About The Topic?:
From this activity I learnt the formula for getting a total of a number divisible by 'n'. The item I found most challenging in this activity was everything three dice because it required me a lot of work.It was hard to find the exceptions of the formula for getting a total of a number divisible by 'n' for the three dice.
    ...
How Well Did You Undertake This Activity?
From this activity I learnt that I did well in communicating what I have found to the readers. I was able to achieve in high marks for the criterion C, which is communication in Mathematics.
The unit I found most useful was probability because there were many questions that are real life problems. From this unit I learnt how to use probability in my life when necessary.
The hardest assessment task in this subject was the MYP assignment on probability. I had many difficulties understanding the questions and solving the problem.
I am proudest about the MYP assignment on Probability because I was able to achieve high grade despite difficulty. I really struggled to understand the questions at first however I was able to solve the questions and achieve high mark.
I have improved the most in exponential functions because it there were many things that I haven't learnt before. There were a little bit of difficulty understanding the concepts in exponential functions. Also i have improved in probability. I have learnt many new terms on probability.
This subject is one of my strongest subjects because I learnt many things before in other language. The Korean Maths tends to be a year ahead of the Maths we learn in school and I am currently learning ahead of my year level so this is one of my strongest subjects.

    Cloud Project
Ji Yoon, I think that the feedback you got from the exhibition must prove to you how fantastic your artworks are. Art does not always have to be obvious in meaning, yours certainly made people think. I am glad you think that all your hard work was worth it, well done.

    The Cloud Project
Before we started this project we have researched about an artist called Guan Wei. He has used clouds and yogic figure to express his ideas. From this artist as an inspiration we have started our project, which associates with using ‘clouds’ for an artwork.

    the lines.
After I was done with drawing the cloud shape on to the lino, I started to draw the other image on the workbook. Because for this project we were required to have one cloud and one other object for the lino print I was thinking what to draw for the other object. I decided to draw a hand for the other shape. I started to trace my hand on the book. Then I fixed some part of the traced image of my hand to look more artistic (elongating fingers). Because the hand looked a little bit dull I decided to put a pattern in. This was when my tedious process has started. I started to draw many short lines to express a mechanic feeling of the hand. When I got bored, I started to carve out the negative for the cloud shapes.

{IMG628.jpeg} The lino (cloud) after the first artst's proofI
    had my

    pattern out.
Then I did the artist’s proof for the hands. Then I started to print the hands and the clouds on to different color sheets of paper with different color inks. I just started to print it on without thinking of anything else. I made a lot of prints.
While I was making the prints, we were introduced to new process called marbling. The texture, color and shapes of marbling papers were really irregular and yet beautiful. Therefore I decided to use some marbling papers for my artworks later on. Together with my classmates I have made a lot of marbling papers on many different kinds of papers. I decided also to print some hands on the marbling paper because I felt that it would give a good effect. Therefore I did some prints on the marbling paper (only the hands, not the clouds).
    ...
acrylic again. {IMG659_copy.jpeg} The board that I have sprayed the acrylic on
After I have done painting the board, I’ve cut some cloud shape and used a spray adhesive to glue it on the board. Then I broke one mirror to start gluing the mirror on to the boards. I first started with using the white glue (PVA) to glue the mirrors, however when I glued the big pieces, it started to slip down. Therefore I tried using spray adhesive to glue the mirrors. It worked better and faster than using the white glue. I broke total of 3 mirrors to glue all the mirrors for the board.
After{IMG670.jpeg} The board after I have finished gluing on the mirrors
    After

    the boards.
Then I had to finish the second artwork. For the second artwork, I decided to put together all the prints I have and make it as an artwork. Therefore I traced more hands on the marbling paper and cut them out. Then I started to glue the hands together. After I had some hands glued together, I got some cloud glued on the top of the hands. I had most of the hands overlapping and the hands overlapped some of the clouds. After I have finished gluing the hands and the clouds together I decided to have one backing sheet for this artwork. Because I wanted a little bit more contrast for the backing sheet, I decided to use purple acrylic to give a pattern to the backing sheet. I used a sponge roller to paint the purple acrylic on to the backing sheet. After I did paint the backing sheet with purple acrylic, I decided to put hand stamps. Therefore I’ve put my hand on the acrylic and stamped the handprint on the backing sheet.
Then I waited for the paint to dry. When the backing sheet was dry enough I used a spray adhesive to glue the cloud and the hands on to the backing sheet. I got some help from the teacher while I was gluing it on to the backing sheet since the artwork was too big.
